Port Operations & Scheduling

Side-Loader Container Handling

We maintain close working relationships with terminal operators at the Port of Brisbane, which enables us to manage vehicle booking slots (VBS) efficiently and minimise turnaround times. Our operations team monitors vessel arrival schedules, container availability notifications, and free-time expiry dates to ensure your containers are collected and returned within the optimal timeframe.

For import containers, we track vessel ETAs and pre-plan collection runs so your freight is collected as soon as it becomes available. This reduces storage costs and gets your goods to your premises faster. For export containers, we manage cut-off times carefully to ensure your containers reach the terminal well before the deadline.

Our scheduling system accommodates both standard and out-of-hours requirements. If your operations demand early morning collections or late-night deliveries to meet specific production schedules, we can arrange suitable timing to integrate seamlessly with your workflow.

Detention & Demurrage Management

One of the most costly aspects of container logistics is detention and demurrage charges. These fees accumulate quickly when containers are not returned within the shipping line's allocated free time. F&T Freight helps you avoid these unnecessary costs through:

  • Proactive monitoring of free-time expiry dates for every container
  • Priority scheduling for containers approaching their detention deadline
  • Same-day empty return services to nominated dehire depots
  • Communication with your customs broker to expedite clearance
  • Advance notification if any delays are anticipated that may affect free time

Our track record of on-time empty returns has saved our clients significant costs that would otherwise be lost to detention fees. We treat your container timelines with the same urgency as our own.

Safety and Compliance

Container transport carries specific safety obligations under Chain of Responsibility (CoR) legislation. Overweight containers, improperly secured loads, and non-compliant documentation can result in significant penalties and safety risks. F&T Freight maintains strict compliance protocols including:

  • Verified Gross Mass (VGM) checks on all export containers
  • Weight bridge services for import containers where required
  • Container condition inspections before loading and after delivery
  • Proper placarding and documentation for dangerous goods containers
  • Driver training in container twist-lock procedures and load restraint
  • Fatigue management compliance for all container cartage operations

"F&T Freight handles all our import container cartage from the Port of Brisbane. Their understanding of port operations, VBS scheduling, and detention management has saved us thousands in potential fees. The communication is excellent — we always know exactly when our containers will arrive at our warehouse."

Container Transport — Common Questions

How soon after vessel arrival can you collect my container?

We monitor vessel schedules and container availability notifications closely. In most cases, we can collect your container within 24 hours of it becoming available at the terminal, subject to customs clearance being completed and a vehicle booking slot (VBS) being secured. For time-critical imports, we pre-book collection slots based on vessel ETA.

What is the difference between a side-loader and a skeletal trailer?

A skeletal trailer carries the container and requires a crane or forklift at the delivery point to lift the container off. A side-loader is a self-loading vehicle with hydraulic arms that can lift and place containers independently — no equipment is needed at the delivery site. Side-loaders are ideal for locations without permanent container handling infrastructure.

How do you handle overweight containers?

Overweight containers exceeding legal road limits cannot be transported as-is. Options include part-unpacking the container at the port to bring it within legal weight, or obtaining a special permit for overweight transport where the route allows. We assess each situation individually and advise on the most cost-effective compliant solution.

What are detention charges and how can I avoid them?

Detention charges are daily fees imposed by shipping lines when containers are not returned within the allocated free time (typically 5-7 days). To avoid them, ensure customs clearance is completed promptly, have your unpack facility ready to receive the container immediately, and return the empty container as soon as possible. We track all free-time deadlines and prioritise containers approaching their expiry.

Can you transport containers to regional Queensland?

Yes, we transport containers throughout Queensland including regional destinations. Transit times and pricing vary based on distance and route accessibility. For remote locations, we assess road suitability and any permits that may be required for the container size and weight on regional roads.
