How Our Interstate Network Operates

Interstate Highway Freight Transport

Interstate freight logistics involve more complexity than local deliveries. Longer distances, state border regulations, driver fatigue management, and multi-modal transfers all need careful coordination. Here is how F&T Freight manages these challenges:

Linehaul Planning: Our operations team schedules departures based on committed volumes, ensuring trucks depart on time regardless of whether they are completely full. This commitment to schedule reliability means you can confidently quote delivery timeframes to your customers.

Driver Management: Interstate routes require strict compliance with Heavy Vehicle National Law fatigue regulations. Our drivers operate within legal work and rest hours, with scheduled changeover points on longer corridors. This ensures safety while maintaining transit time commitments.

Network Partners: On routes where we utilise partner carriers for the linehaul leg, we maintain rigorous vetting standards. Partners are selected based on safety record, service reliability, insurance coverage, and technology capabilities. We retain full visibility of your freight regardless of which vehicle carries it.

Last-Mile Delivery: At the destination city, freight is either delivered by our partner depot direct to the receiver or cross-docked for final delivery by a local fleet. We coordinate delivery appointments and time windows to meet your customer's requirements.

Interstate Freight Options

  • Full Truck Load (FTL): Dedicated vehicle for your freight only — fastest transit time with no intermediate handling between origin and destination.
  • Part Load (LTL): Cost-effective option for shipments under full-truck volumes. Your freight is consolidated with compatible goods heading to the same destination region.
  • Express Interstate: Priority handling with guaranteed transit times for urgent consignments. Expedited processing at all transfer points.
  • Scheduled Contract Runs: Fixed weekly or bi-weekly departures at agreed rates for businesses with regular interstate freight volumes. Volume discounts apply.
  • Project Freight: Large-scale or one-off transport requirements such as machinery relocation, exhibition freight, or inventory transfers between sites.

Tracking & Communication

Interstate shipments require greater visibility due to longer transit times and multiple handling points. F&T Freight provides comprehensive tracking and communication throughout the interstate journey.

You receive confirmation when your freight departs Brisbane, status updates at key checkpoints along the route, and notification when delivery is completed at the destination. If any delays occur due to weather, road conditions, or other factors, we communicate proactively rather than waiting for you to enquire.

Electronic proof of delivery (ePOD) is captured at the receiver's premises and made available to you promptly after delivery completion. This documentation includes recipient name, signature, delivery time, and any notes regarding condition or discrepancies.

Packaging Standards for Interstate Transit

Interstate freight undergoes more handling events and longer transit durations than local deliveries. Proper packaging is essential to ensure goods arrive at their destination in the same condition they left your premises. F&T Freight recommends the following standards for interstate consignments:

  • Palletisation: All freight should be palletised on standard Australian pallets (1165mm x 1165mm) and stretch-wrapped securely. Loose items on pallets must be strapped or banded to prevent shifting during transit.
  • Carton quality: Use new or structurally sound cartons rated for the weight they contain. Double-walled cartons are recommended for items over 15 kg.
  • Height limits: Palletised freight should not exceed 1.5 metres total height (including pallet) to allow safe stacking in the trailer.
  • Labelling: Every item must be clearly labelled with receiver name, address, and contact number. Consignment labels should be affixed to the outside of the wrapping, not buried inside.
  • Fragile goods: Items susceptible to vibration or impact damage must be packed with appropriate internal cushioning and marked as fragile on all sides.

Inadequately packaged freight may be subject to a packaging surcharge if our team needs to re-wrap or re-secure goods before loading. In some cases, freight that does not meet safe transit standards may be refused until properly packaged. These measures protect both your goods and other consignments sharing the vehicle.

Dangerous Goods Interstate

Certain dangerous goods can be transported interstate subject to ADG Code (Australian Dangerous Goods Code) requirements. This includes proper classification, packaging, labelling, placarding, documentation, and vehicle equipment specifications. If your interstate freight includes any dangerous goods, please declare these at the time of booking so we can confirm our capability and ensure full regulatory compliance.

"Our business ships automotive parts to workshops across NSW and Victoria. Transit time consistency is critical because our customers have vehicles waiting for parts. F&T Freight's interstate service delivers to Sydney next-day and Melbourne in two days — and they actually achieve these timelines consistently. When there is a genuine delay, they communicate immediately rather than leaving us guessing."

Interstate Freight — Common Questions

What are the transit times to major cities?

Standard transit times from Brisbane: Sydney 12-18 hours (next business day), Melbourne 24-36 hours (2 business days), Adelaide 36-48 hours (2-3 business days), Perth 5-6 business days via road. Express options are available for time-critical shipments on most corridors.

Is there a weight limit for interstate freight?

Standard interstate linehaul services accept consignments up to full truckload capacity (approximately 22-24 tonnes for a B-double configuration). Single items exceeding 3 metres in length or 1.5 tonnes may require special handling arrangements. Contact us for oversize or overweight requirements.

How do you handle delivery in the destination city?

We partner with established local carriers in each destination city who handle the final-mile delivery on our behalf. This network provides metropolitan delivery coverage in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth. Your freight is tracked through the entire chain and a single point of contact remains responsible for the shipment end-to-end.

What if my freight is damaged during interstate transit?

All goods are covered under our carrier's liability insurance during transit. In the event of damage, report it to us immediately with supporting photographs. We investigate all claims thoroughly and process valid claims promptly. For high-value goods, we recommend additional transit insurance which we can arrange on your behalf.

Can I send refrigerated freight interstate?

Yes, we offer temperature-controlled interstate services for perishable and temperature-sensitive goods. Refrigerated linehaul services operate on the Brisbane-Sydney and Brisbane-Melbourne corridors with continuous temperature monitoring throughout the journey. Contact us for temperature-controlled interstate requirements.
