TAIL-LIFT SERVICES

Ground-level loading and unloading at any location — no dock or forklift required.

Tail-Lift Delivery Services

F&T Freight's tail-lift service provides the solution for deliveries where the receiving location does not have a loading dock, forklift, or other mechanical unloading equipment. Our hydraulic tail-lift vehicles enable ground-level loading and unloading at any address — whether it is a suburban retail shop, a residential address, a construction site, or a remote rural property.

Many businesses and receivers simply do not have the infrastructure for conventional dock-height deliveries. Without a tail-lift, heavy pallets and bulky items cannot be safely unloaded from a standard truck. Our tail-lift fleet eliminates this barrier, making freight accessible at locations that would otherwise require expensive equipment or multiple personnel to manage.

When You Need Tail-Lift

Tail-Lift Truck Ground-Level Delivery

Tail-lift services are essential whenever freight needs to be lowered from truck bed height to ground level without the aid of a loading dock or forklift. Common situations include:

Retail Deliveries

Shops, showrooms, and small businesses in strip malls or high streets that lack rear dock access and forklift equipment.

Construction Sites

Delivering building materials, equipment, and supplies to active construction sites where conditions are temporary and loading docks do not exist.

Residential Deliveries

Heavy items delivered to homes including furniture, appliances, fitness equipment, and palletised building materials for renovations.

Events & Exhibitions

Delivering exhibition stands, display materials, and event equipment to venues, convention centres, and temporary event locations.

Equipment Specifications

Our tail-lift fleet features hydraulic platforms rated to handle heavy palletised loads safely. The tail-lift platform folds out from the rear of the truck and can be lowered from truck bed height to ground level in a controlled manner, allowing pallets to be rolled off using a hand pallet jack.

  • Platform capacity: up to 1,500 kg (varies by vehicle)
  • Platform width: sufficient for standard Australian pallets (1165mm x 1165mm)
  • Smooth hydraulic operation for controlled raising and lowering
  • Non-slip platform surface for safe load handling in all weather
  • Vehicles available in multiple payload sizes from 3-tonne to 12-tonne capacity
  • Hand pallet jacks carried on all tail-lift vehicles

Service Coverage & Booking

Tail-lift services are available for both local Brisbane metropolitan deliveries and regional Queensland destinations. The service can be booked as a standalone delivery or added to a standard freight consignment where the final delivery point requires ground-level unloading.

When booking a tail-lift delivery, it is helpful to provide us with information about the delivery location including any access restrictions (narrow driveways, weight limits on surfaces, overhead obstructions) so we can assign the most suitable vehicle and advise the driver accordingly.

Tail-lift deliveries typically require a few additional minutes at the delivery point compared to standard dock deliveries. We account for this in our scheduling to ensure subsequent deliveries on the run are not impacted. For multi-drop tail-lift runs, we plan additional time accordingly.

Safety Protocols

Operating a tail-lift safely requires proper training and adherence to safe work procedures. All F&T Freight drivers operating tail-lift vehicles are trained in:

  • Pre-operation safety checks on the hydraulic system before each use
  • Load weight assessment to ensure the tail-lift capacity is not exceeded
  • Safe positioning of the vehicle on level ground where possible
  • Proper load placement centred on the platform
  • Use of wheel chocks and platform locking mechanisms during operation
  • Pedestrian awareness during lowering and raising operations

Tail-lift operations are subject to workplace health and safety regulations. Our procedures comply with relevant Australian Standards for powered platforms and lifting equipment. Drivers conduct documented pre-start inspections of the tail-lift mechanism at the beginning of each shift, and any identified faults are reported immediately for rectification before the vehicle is used.

Combining Tail-Lift with Other Services

Tail-lift capability can be combined with other F&T Freight services to create a complete logistics solution. Common combinations include:

  • Tail-lift + Multi-drop delivery: Ideal for businesses distributing to multiple retail stores or commercial premises that lack dock facilities
  • Tail-lift + Refrigerated transport: Temperature-controlled deliveries to restaurants, cafes, and food retailers without rear dock access
  • Tail-lift + Interstate freight: Last-mile delivery at the destination city where the receiving premises do not have mechanical unloading capability
  • Tail-lift + Warehousing: Pick, pack, and deliver direct to customer sites that require ground-level unloading

Cost Considerations

Tail-lift services carry a modest surcharge compared to standard dock-to-dock delivery, reflecting the specialised equipment and additional time required for ground-level unloading operations. However, this cost is typically far less than the alternatives — hiring a forklift on-site, arranging manual labour for offloading, or being unable to receive freight at all.

For businesses that regularly require tail-lift delivery, we offer contract rates that reduce the per-delivery cost. If your delivery schedule is predictable — for example, weekly replenishment to a set of retail locations — we can incorporate tail-lift requirements into a standard rate agreement that provides budget certainty and competitive pricing.

When requesting a quote that includes tail-lift delivery, please advise us of the delivery location characteristics (ground surface, slope, overhead clearance, access width) so we can assign the most suitable vehicle and provide an accurate cost estimate.

"We operate a chain of retail stores across Brisbane — none of which have loading docks. F&T Freight's tail-lift service is the only way we can receive pallet deliveries without hiring a forklift at every location. The drivers are careful with our products and always deliver to the exact spot we need inside the store."

Tail-Lift Services — Common Questions

What is the maximum weight the tail-lift can handle?

Our standard tail-lift vehicles have a platform capacity of 1,000kg to 1,500kg depending on the specific vehicle. This accommodates most standard pallets and heavy items. For loads exceeding 1,500kg, alternative solutions such as crane trucks or hiab vehicles may be more appropriate — contact us to discuss.

Does tail-lift delivery cost extra?

Yes, tail-lift service attracts a surcharge over standard delivery rates because it requires specialised equipment and additional time at the delivery point. The surcharge is quoted upfront as part of your rate. For regular tail-lift customers, we offer discounted rates on ongoing arrangements.

Can the driver move goods inside my premises?

Our standard service includes delivery to the ground level at the vehicle access point. For placement inside premises, this is subject to safe access and a hand-unload fee may apply. Drivers are equipped with hand trolleys and pallet jacks for short-distance movement on level surfaces. Long-distance or multi-level placement requires prior arrangement.

Can you collect using a tail-lift as well?

Yes, tail-lift vehicles work for both collection and delivery. If your pickup location does not have a loading dock or forklift, our tail-lift truck can lower the platform to ground level, the goods are loaded onto the platform, and then raised to truck bed height for secure transit. The same service in reverse.

What surfaces can the tail-lift operate on?

The tail-lift platform requires a reasonably flat, stable surface at the delivery point. Sealed concrete, asphalt, or compacted gravel are all suitable. Soft ground, steep slopes, or uneven terrain may prevent safe operation. If you are unsure about site suitability, our operations team can advise based on your location details.
